Hello survivors! Today, we continue our series of interviews of our developers! And today, you’re going to meet someone that we locked up in a cave, they never see the sunlight, and if the game doesn’t work, it’s their fault. They’ll probably say that it’s the game designer’s fault, but no one believes them anyway. (Hopefully) Let’s introduce Raoul, developer on Dead In Vinland!
Who are you?
CCCP: Tell us your name, your age, and your role at CCCP for Dead In Vinland.
Raoul: I’m Raoul BERNARD, I’m 23, and I’m a developer for Dead In Vinland.
CCCP: What did you do before?
Raoul: I went to an engineering school (TELECOM SudParis), I graduated one year ago, and I started to work at CCCP shortly after.
Your role for Dead In Vinland
CCCP: Tell us more about your role in the game.
Raoul: I work with Thomas (the lead developer) to develop all the game-systems and integrate the assets made by our artists. Among others, we work on the new systems (traits, AI,…) and we make them work with systems that were created for Dead In Bermuda. So, it can be tricky to mix those two together, but in the end, it works! Finally, we put into place the UI for those systems.
CCCP: What’s your typical working day at the moment?
Raoul: As we’re getting close to the release of the game, most of my work consists in finding and fixing the last bugs.
I also have to put the last touch to some parts of the game (the tooltips for instance), and finish the last systems.
CCCP: Your favorite mechanics in Dead In Vinland?
Raoul: The combat system, definitely. It’s a huge feature that took us a lot of work and time (and still does now!). But the result is really fun and make the game feel very dynamic.
CCCP: Your favorite character? Why?
Raoul: Well, no one told me I couldn’t take the bad guys, so I’ll choose Björn! Not only because he’s a badass, but also because he represents the opposite of what Eirik and his family are. Their will to live in peace clashes with his wall of violence and death, and that will make things really interesting in my opinion.
As a gamer
CCCP: Your favorite game?
Raoul: I don’t really have one, for I love a lot of games. I think if I have to pick one, I have to talk about Cave Story. Not only because of its very nervous gameplay, but also because of the story (and the music!).
CCCP: What have you been playing lately?
Raoul: I’ve been playing Borderlands 2, Payday 2 and Half-Life 2 (yes, there are many 2s, I know!)
In the office
CCCP: Describe your co-workers with 3 words.
Raoul: Friendly – Capable – Thirsty (eating is not enough!)
CCCP: Any good anecdote or memories from within the walls of CCCP?
Raoul: One day, 3 different members of the team brought some pains au chocolat in the office. That was a good day.
CCCP: Any particular habit at work?
Raoul: I ALWAYS forget to drink coffee before it gets too cold. And as developers, we can only drink coffee.
CCCP: Any advice for anyone who wants to become a game developer like you?
Raoul: Make your code as clear as possible, your colleagues and future you will be grateful. Also, don’t cut your hair, that’s a good start.
That’s all for today! We’ll let our developer go back to his cave with Thomas. See you next time for a new member interview!
